Automated Unloading with Shape Memory Technology: BEUMER Relies on Ingpuls‘ E-Pouch

Challenge

In highly dynamic e-commerce intralogistics, unloading transport pouches in pouch sorting systems had become a time-consuming and error-prone bottleneck. A solution was needed that could be installed in very large quantities while remaining highly reliable, robust, lightweight and economically viable.

Solution

Together with Ingpuls Dynamics, the BEUMER Group developed the E-Pouch: an intelligent pouch whose opening mechanism is based on Shape Memory Alloys. The integrated SMA actuator systems are electrically activated and open the pouch dynamically and precisely at the required location, enabling fully automated unloading with millions of repeatable cycles.

Result

The BEUMER Group Pouch System with AutoDrop achieves a throughput of up to 10,000 items per hour while significantly reducing maintenance requirements and installation space. The result is a highly efficient and fully automated process that sets new standards in logistics automation.

The project with the BEUMER Group demonstrated the impressive potential of Shape Memory Alloys when material expertise and application know-how come together. From the initial concept and prototyping through to the series-production solution, we were able to develop a robust, low-maintenance and highly reliable actuation system within a short period of time, designed for millions of cycles.
